Thanh Xuan is a residential district in the south-west of Hanoi, beyond Dong Da, crossed by the long Nguyen Trai avenue and the elevated Metro Line 2A. It is a district of universities, apartment towers, offices and markets, with the large Royal City shopping complex at its northern edge. Few tourists stay here, and that is part of its appeal: prices are low, daily life is local, and the metro makes it easy to reach the centre.
On this site the Thanh Xuan zone covers the old district together with Hoang Mai, Thanh Tri and Ha Dong to the south and south-west. Since July 2025 these areas have been divided into new wards, but residents and addresses still use these names.
Thanh Xuan suits budget travellers, visitors staying with friends or family in the south-west of the city, students and academics visiting the universities of the area, business travellers with work along Nguyen Trai or in Ha Dong, and travellers on longer stays who want low prices and local life.
The trade-off is distance from the centre: the Old Quarter is about 5 to 9 km away, 25 to 40 minutes by car, and there are few sights in the district itself.
The 43 properties listed in this area are mostly hotels, followed by apartments, homestays and a few aparthotels. Hotels are mainly two- and three-star, aimed at domestic travellers and business visitors, and apartments are in the residential towers along Nguyen Trai and around Royal City. Guest ratings are good, with a median of about 8.3 out of 10 on this site.
As a guide for 2026, rooms cost about 400,000 to 900,000 VND a night in most hotels, among the lowest prices in the city, and apartments about 600,000 to 1,500,000 VND.
Thanh Xuan is a district for everyday life rather than sightseeing. Royal City, a large complex with an underground shopping mall, an ice rink, a water park, cinemas and restaurants, is the main attraction for families. The district's markets and food streets offer cheap local meals, and the parks of Thanh Xuan and Nhan Chinh are local meeting places in the evening.
Further south, Ha Dong is known for its traditional silk village, Van Phuc, where weavers still make silk and the shops sell scarves and fabric. For the city's main sights, the Temple of Literature and Ba Dinh are a short metro or taxi ride away.
From Noi Bai International Airport, about 30 to 35 km away, the ride takes 45 to 70 minutes and costs about 280,000 to 450,000 VND by ride-hailing car. Giap Bat bus station, for buses to the south, is in neighbouring Hoang Mai.
Metro Line 2A runs above Nguyen Trai avenue, with stations such as Thuong Dinh and Vanh Dai 3, and connects Thanh Xuan to Cat Linh in the north-east and Ha Dong in the south-west, with fares of about 8,000 to 15,000 VND. From Cat Linh, a short taxi ride reaches the Old Quarter. Ride-hailing cars take 25 to 40 minutes to the centre.
Autumn, from about October to November, and spring, from March to April, are the most comfortable seasons for trips into the centre. Summer is hot and humid, and heavy showers can flood some streets and slow traffic; winter is cool and grey. Around Tet, the Lunar New Year in late January or February, many residents return to their home provinces and the district becomes much quieter, with some shops and restaurants closed.
Thanh Xuan is one of the most lived-in parts of Hanoi. Several universities give the district a young population, and the streets around them are full of cheap restaurants, milk-tea shops, copy shops and street-food stalls open from early morning to late at night. Office workers fill the cafés at lunchtime, and in the evening families head to the malls and parks.
There are few bars aimed at foreigners and little English away from the larger hotels and malls, but prices are low and the welcome is usually warm. For travellers curious about everyday Hanoi, a walk through a local market in the morning and dinner at the street stalls in the evening are the best introduction to the district.
For travellers, Thanh Xuan works best as a quiet, inexpensive base, with Metro Line 2A and short taxi rides connecting it to the Temple of Literature, Ba Dinh and the Old Quarter.
For trips south of Hanoi, the south-west of the city is convenient. The roads to Ninh Binh, with Trang An and Tam Coc, and to the Perfume Pagoda start on this side of the city, and Giap Bat bus station in neighbouring Hoang Mai has buses to the southern provinces. Tours that pick up in the Old Quarter usually pass close to the district, saving time on the way out.
Closer to home, Van Phuc silk village in Ha Dong makes a pleasant half-day trip, and the end of Metro Line 2A at Yen Nghia is close to the bus station for the south-west. For the classic sights of Hanoi, Metro Line 2A to Cat Linh and a short taxi ride lead to the Temple of Literature, Ba Dinh and the Old Quarter.
For budget stays, local life or a reason to be in the south-west of the city, yes. For sightseeing, the Old Quarter, the French Quarter or Ba Dinh are much closer to the main sights.
About 5 to 9 km: 25 to 40 minutes by car, or Metro Line 2A to Cat Linh and a short taxi ride from there.
Yes. Metro Line 2A runs above Nguyen Trai avenue, with stations such as Thuong Dinh and Vanh Dai 3.
Royal City for shopping and family activities, the local markets, and Van Phuc silk village in Ha Dong to the south.
