Staying in Ba Dinh: Hanoi's monuments, Truc Bach lake and Kim Ma

272 accommodations

Ba Dinh lies west of the Old Quarter and is the political and symbolic heart of Vietnam. Here, on Ba Dinh Square, Ho Chi Minh read the declaration of independence in 1945, and around it stand the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, the yellow Presidential Palace, the One Pillar Pagoda and the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Beyond the monuments, Ba Dinh is a green, residential district of embassies, government offices, wide avenues and lakes, with the small Truc Bach lake to the north and the busy Kim Ma and Lieu Giai streets to the west.

On this site Ba Dinh covers the old district, including Truc Bach, Ngoc Ha, Giang Vo, Kim Ma, Lieu Giai and Doi Can. Since July 2025 the area has been divided into new wards such as Ba Dinh, Ngoc Ha and Giang Vo, but addresses and residents still use the name Ba Dinh.

Who should stay in Ba Dinh?

Ba Dinh suits travellers interested in history and museums, families, business travellers with meetings at ministries, embassies or the offices along Kim Ma and Lieu Giai, and anyone who wants a quieter, more local base close to the centre. The area around Truc Bach lake is particularly pleasant, with small hotels, lakeside cafés and seafood restaurants, and the Old Quarter is a short ride away.

The trade-off is distance from the lake and the Old Quarter: from Kim Ma and Lieu Giai they are about 3 to 4 km, 10 to 20 minutes by car, and the western part of the district has fewer sights on foot.
