Dong Da is one of the most populous districts of Hanoi, south-west of the Old Quarter and Ba Dinh. It is a dense, lively area of shopping streets, universities, hospitals, markets and alleys, and it is home to one of the city's most important monuments: the Temple of Literature (Van Mieu – Quoc Tu Giam), founded in 1070 and Vietnam's first university. Few tourists stay here, but those who do find local Hanoi at its most authentic, with good prices and easy access to the centre.
On this site Dong Da covers the old district, including Van Mieu, Kham Thien, O Cho Dua, Thai Ha, Lang Ha and Cat Linh. Since July 2025 it has been divided into new wards, but residents and addresses still use the name Dong Da.
Dong Da suits budget travellers, visitors on longer stays who want local life, business travellers with work in the offices along Lang Ha and Thai Ha, students and visitors to the hospitals and universities of the area. It is also convenient for travellers who want to use Metro Line 2A, which crosses the district.
The trade-offs are traffic and the lack of a single centre: the main roads are busy and noisy, the district is large, and the Old Quarter is about 2 to 4 km away, 10 to 25 minutes by car depending on the hotel and traffic.
The 131 properties listed in this area are mostly apartments and hotels, followed by homestays, aparthotels and guest houses. Many apartments are in residential buildings around Thai Ha, Lang Ha and the lanes off the main roads, and hotels are mostly mid-range, with a few four- and five-star hotels near the business streets. Guest ratings are good, with a median of about 8.3 out of 10 on this site.
As a guide for 2026, rooms cost about 500,000 to 1,200,000 VND a night in most hotels and apartments, less than in the Old Quarter for similar space, with international hotels from about 2,000,000 VND.
The Temple of Literature is the highlight: five courtyards of gardens, gates and pavilions dedicated to Confucius, with stone stelae on the backs of tortoises recording the names of the scholars who passed the royal examinations. It costs 70,000 VND and is open daily from 08:00 to 17:00. Students in graduation gowns come here for photos, especially in spring.
Nearby are the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum, just across the road in Ba Dinh, and the Hanoi Train Street, which runs along the edge of the district towards the railway station. Dong Da Mound, the site of the 1789 victory of Emperor Quang Trung over the Qing army, has a memorial and a park. The district's markets, such as Thai Ha and O Cho Dua, and the shopping streets of Chua Boc and Thai Ha are busy with locals, and Kham Thien street has a memorial to the 1972 bombing of the city.
From Noi Bai International Airport, about 28 to 32 km away, the ride takes 45 to 60 minutes and costs about 250,000 to 400,000 VND by ride-hailing car. Hanoi railway station is on the eastern edge of the district.
Metro Line 2A runs through Dong Da, with stations such as Cat Linh, La Thanh, Thai Ha and Lang, connecting the district to Thanh Xuan and Ha Dong in the south-west. Ride-hailing cars and motorbikes take 10 to 25 minutes to the Old Quarter. The underground extension of Line 3, with a station at Van Mieu near the Temple of Literature, is expected around the end of 2027.
Autumn, from about October to November, and spring, from March to April, are the most pleasant seasons. Around Tet and in spring, the Temple of Literature is busy with students and families, and before exams many come to pray for good results. Summer is hot and humid, with showers that can flood some streets, and winter is cool and grey. During Tet, the Lunar New Year in late January or February, calligraphers set up stalls near the Temple of Literature to write wishes in traditional script.
Dong Da is everyday Hanoi. In the morning the alleys fill with breakfast stalls, people heading to work and students on motorbikes; the markets sell vegetables, meat and flowers from dawn, and the cafés are full from early morning. The district is home to several large universities and hospitals, which bring a young, busy population and plenty of cheap restaurants, milk-tea shops and street food.
The main roads are lined with shops, banks and offices, while behind them are narrow lanes where families live in tube houses and children play in the alleys. English is less common than in the Old Quarter, but menus with pictures and friendly staff make it easy to eat well for little money. In the evening the lakes of the district, such as Ba Mau and Van Chuong, are local meeting places.
For travellers, Dong Da offers good value, local atmosphere and the Temple of Literature on the doorstep, with the metro and short taxi rides connecting it to the rest of the city.
Dong Da is one of the best places in Hanoi to eat cheaply and well. The lanes around Thai Ha, O Cho Dua and the universities are full of street-food stalls and family restaurants serving pho, bun cha, banh cuon and hot pot, and the student areas have endless milk-tea shops and snack stalls open late into the night. Lang Ha and Thai Ha also have international restaurants and chains for office workers.
The markets of the district are worth a morning visit for fresh fruit and local snacks, and many cafés occupy the upper floors of tube houses, with views over the busy streets below. Meals here usually cost a fraction of the price of the same dishes in the tourist streets of the Old Quarter.
